Lighter to File for U.S. Derivatives Trading and Clearing Licenses in November
Lighter intends to formally apply to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in November for Designated Contract Market (DCM) and Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO) licenses, founder and CEO Vladimir Novakovski said at the platform's Q3 investor meeting, a step that would open its services to U.S. institutional clients.
Novakovski said the team has held extensive preliminary discussions with CFTC staff on how existing regulatory principles can be applied to onchain trading and clearing. Regulators have up to 280 days to review a filing once it is submitted; the team expects that preparatory work to help speed approval.
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has said Lighter was not selected as a partner for Robinhood's U.S. perpetual futures business, mainly over regulatory structure. After Lighter disclosed its licensing plans, the community again speculated about a deeper collaboration with Robinhood. No such partnership has been officially confirmed.
Market data show LIT rose as much as 15% over the past 24 hours on the news and was last trading at $3.76.
