FAQ
About Ethereum Name Service (ENS)
What Is Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and How Does It Work?
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralized domain naming system built on the Ethereum blockchain. It transforms complex wallet addresses (like
0xabc123...
) into easy-to-read names such as yourname.eth
. This simplifies crypto transactions, making blockchain more user-friendly.ENS works by linking human-readable names to Ethereum addresses and other metadata using smart contracts. When you register a
.eth
domain, you gain control over its records, allowing you to point it to wallets, websites (via IPFS), NFTs, or even create subdomains (e.g., pay.yourname.eth
). It uses a hierarchical structure and relies on the Ethereum mainnet, ensuring security, censorship resistance, and full ownership of your domain. When Was Ethereum Name Service Launched?
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) was officially launched in May 2017 by Nick Johnson, a former software engineer at the Ethereum Foundation. The project was developed under the nonprofit ENS Labs (formerly True Names Limited), with funding and support from the Ethereum Foundation.
ENS began as an Ethereum-based alternative to traditional DNS, aiming to make blockchain interaction simpler by mapping Ethereum addresses to human-readable names. The launch included a registrar for
.eth
domains and set the groundwork for decentralized identity on Web3.Key milestones in the roadmap include:
• 2017: Launch of
• 2019: ENS integration with IPFS and multi-coin support
• 2020: Migration to a permanent registrar for domain renewals
• 2021: Launch of the ENS governance token (ENS) and transition to a DAO
• 2023–2025: Ongoing work includes expanding support for Layer 2 networks, off-chain name resolution (via CCIP-Read), and improving browser compatibility and wallet integrations.

What Is the ENS Token Utility?
The ENS token is the governance token for the Ethereum Name Service ecosystem. It allows holders to participate in decision-making through the ENS DAO, including protocol upgrades, treasury allocations, and policy changes. ENS tokens also help decentralize control over key parameters like pricing for
.eth
domains and funding for ecosystem development. You can trade ENS tokens on the BingX Spot Market by selecting the ENS/USDT trading pair. Simply log in, go to the Spot section, enter your desired amount, and place a buy or sell order based on current market conditions.
What Is Ethereum Name Service Tokenomics?
The ENS token has a fixed total supply of 100 million ENS, with no inflation or new issuance planned. It is an ERC-20 governance token, primarily used to vote on proposals in the ENS DAO, which oversees the protocol’s development and treasury.
Here's a breakdown of the ENS token distribution:
1. 25% was airdropped to early
.eth
domain registrants and active community members in November 2021.2. 50% is allocated to the ENS DAO Treasury to fund ongoing development, grants, and ecosystem initiatives.
3. 25% is reserved for contributors, core team members, and future employees, vested over four years.
How to Register an ENS Name on Ethereum Name Service
Registering an ENS name is simple and can be done in just a few steps:
1. Go to the ENS App: Visit the official ENS domain manager at app.ens.domains.
2. Connect Your Wallet: Use a Web3 wallet like MetaMask or Trust Wallet to connect to the site. Make sure you’re on the Ethereum mainnet.
3. Search for a Name: Enter the name you want (e.g.,
yourname.eth
) into the search bar. If it's available, click “Register.”4. Select Registration Duration: Choose how many years you want to register the name for. You’ll pay an annual fee in ETH (typically $5/year for names 5+ characters long), plus gas fees.
5. Complete Two Transactions: Confirm two separate wallet transactions:
• The first locks the name.
• The second finalizes the registration after a short waiting period.
• The first locks the name.
• The second finalizes the registration after a short waiting period.
6. Set Your Records (Optional): After registration, you can set the ENS name to resolve to your Ethereum address, link other wallet addresses (BTC, SOL, etc.), or point to an IPFS website.
Once complete, you fully own and control the ENS name on-chain, and can manage or renew it anytime through the ENS Manager.
How Much Does It Cost to Register an ENS Name on Ethereum Name Service?
Registering an ENS name incurs an annual fee (paid in ETH, converted from USD via Chainlink) based on length: $5 per year for names of 5+ characters, $160 per year for 4-character names, and $640 per year for 3-character names. On top of that, registrants must pay network gas fees, which vary with Ethereum congestion, ENS Manager typically adds a ~10% buffer to hedge against ETH price fluctuations, refunding any excess within the transaction. Additionally, names recently expired may carry a decaying premium fee during a 21-day Dutch auction period before becoming regular registrations.
What Happens If an ENS Name Expires?
If an ENS name expires, it enters a 90-day grace period during which the previous owner can still renew it by paying the required fee and gas costs. During this time, the ENS name will stop resolving but ownership isn't lost yet. If not renewed, the name enters a 21-day “temporary premium” period where others can register it at a declining premium price (Dutch auction style). After that, the domain becomes publicly available at standard rates. Importantly, expired domains don’t automatically delete their records; data like linked addresses may still be visible until overwritten by a new registrant.
Is It Possible to Update or Transfer an ENS Name After Purchase?
Yes, after purchasing an ENS name, you can fully update or transfer it at any time using the ENS Manager app. Owners can change the domain’s resolver records to point to different Ethereum or multi-chain addresses, link IPFS content, or create subdomains. Transfers of ownership are also straightforward; you simply update the controller address to a new Ethereum wallet, and the new owner gains full control. All updates require signing a transaction and paying a small Ethereum gas fee, ensuring that changes are securely recorded on-chain.
Is Ethereum Name Service Decentralized and Secure?
Yes, Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is decentralized and secure, operating entirely through smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. Ownership of
.eth
names is managed on-chain, giving users full control without relying on centralized entities. ENS is governed by a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), where ENS token holders vote on protocol changes, funding, and upgrades. Security features include open-source contracts, support for multi-coin addresses, and integration with secure wallets. However, like all blockchain systems, users must safeguard their private keys, and risks like phishing or typosquatting still exist if names are misused. Is Ethereum Name Service (ENS) a Good Investment?
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is considered a strong long-term investment due to its critical role in simplifying Web3 identity and user experience. As blockchain adoption grows, ENS domains, like
yourname.eth
, make crypto wallets, NFT collections, and decentralized websites far more accessible by replacing long hexadecimal addresses with human-readable names. This utility has already led to integrations across top wallets, dApps, and browsers, cementing ENS as the decentralized identity layer for Ethereum and beyond. The scarcity of short, memorable .eth
domains has also created a valuable digital asset class, much like early internet domain names. Moreover, the ENS token adds value through its role in decentralized governance. ENS holders participate in shaping the protocol’s future, voting on decisions that influence development funding, pricing models, and technical upgrades. With a fixed supply of 100 million tokens and no inflation, ENS offers a deflationary asset aligned with network growth. As ENS expands to support multi-chain interoperability and Layer 2 adoption, investor interest is likely to grow, positioning ENS as a cornerstone of the decentralized web’s naming infrastructure.
