US national debt rises $246,956,928,000 from Feb. 28 to March 17 as ex-IMF official flags Treasury demand
The U.S. national debt increased by about $246.96 billion between February 28 and March 17, reaching $39.02 trillion and about 15% higher year-to-date. The jump equals roughly 49% of the $502.75 billion the federal government has borrowed so far this year. Former IMF deputy director Desmond Lachman said the rise in 10-year Treasury yields since the Iran war began could signal weakening foreign appetite for U.S. government bonds.
