U.S. Broadens Iran Sanctions Reach to Crypto, Gold, Tech and More
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
The U.S. Treasury expanded OFAC authority to treat Iran's crypto, gold, technology, aviation, shipping and related sectors as broadly sanctionable, and added nearly 60 Iran-linked designations. The cited use of over $100M in crypto payments to facilitate Iranian oil sales heightens perceived sanctions and compliance risk across crypto rails, raising the likelihood of stricter screening, de-risking by intermediaries, and disrupted cross-border liquidity in the near term.

The U.S. Treasury Department said the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has designated Iran's cryptocurrency, technology, gold, aviation and shipping sectors as sanctionable, enabling the U.S. to pursue any person or entity determined to be operating in those sectors regardless of where they are located. OFAC also imposed sanctions on nearly 60 Iran-linked entities, individuals and vessels. Treasury said Ukrainian shipping broker Ivan Obukhov has processed more than $100 million in cryptocurrency payments since 2023 to support Iranian oil sales on behalf of the IRGC-Quds Force.
