ChainThink reported on Aug. 2, citing on-chain analytics firm Galaxy Research, that the Coldcard wallet hacking incident has intensified with a third wave of thefts. The latest activity drained an additional 207.73 BTC.
Across all three waves, attackers have taken 1,367.05 BTC—about $88.6 million—impacting 4,585 addresses. Galaxy Research said the campaigns look closely related: on-chain data shows highly similar fund-aggregation patterns, P2WPKH target addresses and derivation paths. Each wave also appeared roughly 27 hours apart, pointing to a likely single actor, though Galaxy noted no definitive attribution has been confirmed.
Galaxy Research added that hacker-controlled terminal addresses currently hold 1,366.39 BTC in total, and the funds remain unspent on-chain. The findings are based solely on Bitcoin block data and the UTXO set, and have not yet been computationally validated to determine whether the affected addresses were vulnerable due to low-entropy generation.
