About Hedera (HBAR)

What Is Hedera (HBAR) and How Does It Work?

Hedera (HBAR) is a fully open-source public distributed ledger that uses the fast, fair, and secure Hashgraph consensus algorithm. Its native token, HBAR, plays a dual role: it pays for network services, like transaction fees, smart contracts, file storage, and tokenization, and secures the network through a proof-of-stake model in which token holders stake HBAR to Governing Council nodes, granting them weighted voting power to validate transactions and protect against attacks.

At its core, Hedera’s Hashgraph consensus relies on “gossip about gossip” and virtual voting. Each node continuously gossips new transaction events, each event containing hashes of two earlier events, so that every participant builds the same directed acyclic graph of events. From this shared history, nodes compute consensus order via virtual votes without transmitting additional vote messages. The result is asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance (ABFT), sustained throughput north of 10,000 transactions per second, and transaction finality in mere seconds.

Who Founded Hedera Hashgraph and When Was It Launched?

Hedera Hashgraph traces its roots to the mid-2010s, when computer scientist Dr. Leemon Baird invented the Hashgraph consensus algorithm under his company Swirlds. In 2018, Dr. Baird teamed up with entrepreneur Mance Harmon (and early collaborator Paul Madsen) to form Hedera, raising funds via an August 2018 ICO to back development. After mirror-node software entered alpha in August 2019, the network opened its public mainnet beta on September 16, 2019, allowing anyone to deploy applications, create accounts, and begin transacting with the native HBAR token.

Since launch, Hedera has been governed by its Council, initially composed of global enterprises like IBM, Google Cloud, FIS and Tata Communications, ensuring decentralization and transparent decision-making. In 2022 the Council open-sourced the Hashgraph IP under the Apache License, and in September 2024 all core network code was contributed to the Linux Foundation’s Hiero project. Looking ahead, Hedera’s 2025 roadmap focuses on:

1. AI & Verifiable Compute: Enabling on-chain AI workflows and secure off-chain computations.

2. Guardian 3.0: Enhanced smart-contract isolation for higher security and scalability.

3. Tokenization & Partnerships: Expanding asset tokenization services through collaborations with Nvidia, Intel and Chainlink to drive enterprise and developer adoption.

What Is HBAR Token Used for?

HBAR Utility: HBAR powers Hedera’s ecosystem by paying for network services, such as transaction fees, smart-contract execution, file storage, and tokenization, and secures consensus through a proof-of-stake model that lets holders stake their HBAR to earn rewards and participate in governance.

Hedera’s proof-of-stake model secures the network and mints new HBAR for staking rewards. The Governing Council has set on-chain rewards at 2.5 % APY for direct staking, while liquid-staking services like Stader Labs offer up to 5.61 % through additional incentives.

On BingX’s Spot Market, navigate to the Spot Trading interface and select the HBAR/USDT (or other available HBAR) trading pair; then enter the amount you wish to buy or sell and choose a Market Order for immediate execution or a Limit Order at your preferred price. Confirm your order to execute the trade, and use live price charts or set price alerts to monitor HBAR’s market movements.

What Is the Total Supply of Hedera (HBAR)?

Hedera has a fixed total supply of 50 million HBAR tokens, and the token supply cannot be increased without unanimous Council vote.

HBAR Token Allocation Breakdown

1. Initial Development & Licensing: 3.88 billion HBAR (7.77 %)

2. Purchase Agreements (SAFTs & TPAs): 12.70 billion HBAR (25.40 %)

3. Network Governance & Operations: 8.12 billion HBAR (16.23 %)

4. Ecosystem & Open-Source Development: 25.24 billion HBAR (50.47 %)

5. Unallocated Supply: 0.07 billion HBAR (0.13 %)

Tokens vest and transfer to user accounts quarterly per Council commitments. In Q1 2025 alone, ~3.8 billion HBAR were released, marking a 7.68 % jump in released supply.

What Makes Hedera (HBAR) a Good Investment?

Hedera’s aBFT Hashgraph consensus delivers enterprise-grade performance—processing over 10,000 TPS with sub-second finality—while keeping transaction fees ultra-low (typically under $0.001) and energy usage minimal (~0.000003 kWh per tx). Governance is entrusted to a council of up to 39 leading global organizations (e.g., Google, IBM, Boeing), ensuring true decentralization, a strict no-fork guarantee, and enterprise-grade stability.

HBAR powers all network services, transaction fees, smart contracts, file storage, and tokenization, while staking lets holders participate in governance and earn rewards. Strategic partnerships with Intel, NVIDIA, Chainlink and others enable real-world asset tokenization and verifiable compute, and token holders can earn up to 6.5 % APY by staking HBAR, aligning investor incentives with network security and growth.

What Makes Hedera Different From Other Blockchain Platforms?

Hedera isn’t a traditional blockchain—it uses the Hashgraph consensus algorithm, a DAG-based “gossip about gossip” protocol with virtual voting that achieves asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance (aBFT). This design delivers enterprise-grade performance—over 10,000 TPS with sub-second finality—fair transaction ordering, and predictable, ultra-low fees (typically <$0.001) while consuming orders of magnitude less energy than proof-of-work chains, all under a strict no-fork guarantee.

Governance is managed by a rotating council of up to 39 leading global organizations (e.g., Google, IBM, Boeing), ensuring decentralized oversight and enterprise-grade stability. On top of its single public ledger, Hedera natively offers a suite of built-in services, Consensus, Token, Smart Contracts 2.0 (EVM-compatible), and File, that simplify dApp development and enable scalable real-world asset tokenization under one protocol.

How to Stake HBAR Tokens on Hedera Hashgraph

Under Hedera’s native proof-of-stake model, every HBAR holder can secure the network by delegating their entire account balance to a validator, there’s no minimum stake, lock-up period, or bonding mechanism. To stake, move your HBAR into a supported wallet (e.g., HashPack, Blade, Xverse) and either use the wallet’s built-in staking interface or the official Hedera staking portal. From there, select your preferred node, confirm the delegation transaction (which by default stakes your full balance), and you’re set.

Rewards accrue automatically at the network’s current rate (up to 2.5 % APY as set by the Hedera Governing Council), and your staked HBAR remains fully liquid—so you can unstake or transfer at any time without penalties. Track your earnings on HashScan or right within your wallet’s dashboard, or opt for third-party staking services (like Stader Labs or Ledger paired with HashPack) for streamlined delegation and enhanced yield opportunities of up to ~6.5 % with additional incentives.

How Does Hedera Hashgraph's Consensus and Validation Work?

Hedera’s Hashgraph consensus works via “gossip about gossip” and virtual voting: each node gossips new transaction events—each event carrying hashes of two earlier events—and then reconstructs the collective vote locally rather than broadcasting explicit vote messages. This yields asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance with fair transaction ordering, sub-second finality, and minimal communication overhead without any risk of forks.
